"But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry."
2 Timothy 4:5 (NKJV)What Is an Evangelist?
The evangelist is the "good news" carrier — the word euangelistes means one who announces good news. Their primary calling is to the harvest: to the lost, the unsaved, the unchurched. They burn with a passion to see people come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, and they are gifted by God to communicate the Gospel in ways that produce faith in hearers.
While every believer is called to share their faith, the evangelist carries a specific, sustained anointing for this work. They are at their most alive in the harvest field — preaching on street corners, in crusades, in one-on-one conversations, or across media platforms. Wherever there are souls who have not heard the Gospel, the evangelist feels the pull.
The Role of the Evangelist in the Church
One of the least understood aspects of the evangelistic gift is its role within the church. Paul told Timothy — a church leader — to "do the work of an evangelist." The evangelist is not just an external missionary; they also stir the church's heart for the lost. They model evangelism, create a culture of outreach, and remind the body that the primary mission of the church is to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10).
- Harvest anointing: People come to faith under their ministry in unusual numbers.
- Passion for the lost: They feel a genuine burden for those who do not yet know Christ.
- Gifted communicators: They can explain the Gospel clearly, compellingly, and accessibly.
- Culture builders: They help create an outward-facing, evangelistic culture in the local church.
"For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."
Luke 19:10 (NKJV)Philip — The Evangelist
The New Testament names Philip specifically as "the evangelist" (Acts 21:8). His ministry in Samaria (Acts 8:5-8) demonstrates the hallmarks of the evangelistic gift: preaching Christ, miraculous signs following, great joy in the city, and many coming to faith. The evangelist does not just preach — their ministry transforms atmospheres.
